After a youthful experience as a singer at the age of twenty with the single Fiore delicato, uccello forte (recorded under the stage name Geppi Patota), Giuseppe Patota is today a full professor of Italian Linguistics at the University of Siena, an Academician of the Accademia della Crusca and a member of its steering committee, a national member of the Accademia dell'Arcadia, a member of ASLI (Association for the History of the Italian Language), a member of SILBA (Société Internationale Leon Battista Alberti), a member of the jury of the "Premio Strega" and of the advisory working group for the promotion of Italian culture and language in the world established at the MAECI (Ministry of Foreign Affairs). A member of the jury of the Italian-language Olympiad organized by the MIUR since 2015, he has been its president since 2016. In 2017 he was awarded by the Accademia dei Lincei the prize of the Minister of Cultural Heritage for Linguistics and Philology. He is the editor of the series "Grammatiche e lessici" and "Le varietà dell'italiano. Scienze arti professioni" published by the Accademia della Crusca, and a member of the scientific committee of the journals «Studi Linguistici Italiani» and «Bollettino di Italianistica». From 2004 to 2015 he was the scientific director of the Dizionario Italiano Garzanti; he is currently co-director of a new edition of the Vocabolario Treccani (Il nuovo Treccani, 2018). He has around one hundred and thirty publications to his name. He has dealt in particular with fourteenth-, sixteenth- and eighteenth-to-nineteenth-century Italian literary language, with the historical syntax of Italian, with the history of lexicography, with Italian grammaticography, and with the teaching of the Italian language to foreigners. Some of his books have been translated and published in France and Japan. Since 2008 he has been the language consultant of Rai Scuola (formerly Rai Educational) and of the Istituto dell'Enciclopedia Italiana for the creation of programs and teaching tools aimed at teaching Italian to foreigners. In particular, for Rai he curated the linguistic and didactic part of the series "In Italia", produced by Rai Educational in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, University and Research, of the series "Cantieri d'Italia", produced by Rai Educational in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior, and of the "Grande Portale della Lingua Italiana" (http://www.italiano.rai.it/), produced by Rai Educational in collaboration with both ministries, while for the Istituto dell'Enciclopedia Italiana he directed an online course of Italian for foreigners. For about 20 years he has run training and refresher courses dedicated to the teaching of Italian in schools, intended for primary-school teachers and lower- and upper-secondary-school teachers.
