Giovanni Impastato

Activist and writer

Peppino and Giovanni's father was named Luigi (1905-1977); he had been sent into internal exile during the Fascist period because of his membership in the mafia. Their mother was named Felicia Bartolotta (1916-2004), a housewife and the daughter of a clerk of the Municipality of Cinisi; she had tried to avoid the marriage when she discovered Luigi's dealings with Cosa Nostra, but she did not manage to. As a teenager, Peppino, setting himself against his father and his relatives, launched a left-wing, anti-mafia political and cultural activity. For this reason, on 9 May 1978 he was killed by Cosa Nostra. Giovanni Impastato has taken up his brother's legacy and carried on his struggle. He is among the founders of "Casa Memoria Felicia e Peppino Impastato", devoted to raising awareness and fighting the mafias. He is the author of the books "Resistere a mafiopoli", "Oltre i cento passi" and "Mio fratello, tutta una vita con Peppino".
